Lawyer Turned Investor/Businessman

Life’s road can take many turns and where it ends up is not a guarantee.  For N. Murray Edwards who was born on December 10, 1959 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, it was first taking a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Saskatchewan with Great Distinction and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours from the University of Toronto. After moving to Calgary in 1983, he went in to the law profession. He later became a partner with Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer, a law firm based in Calgary.

Then from the law profession his career took a turn and he became a businessman. He is the owner and President of Edco Financial Holdings Ltd, and has been a merchant banker since 1988. Edwards is a leading investor in, a managing director and chairman or vice chairman of, a number of publicly traded companies including Canadian Natural Resources Limited, and Ensign Energy Services Inc., Canada’s second largest oil services company.

A billionaire, Edwards owns a number of resorts and co-owner of the Calgary Flames hockey team.

Edward has made generous contributions to his alma mater the University of Saskatchewan.  On July 24, 2007 the College of Commerce was renamed the N. Murray Edwards School of Business.  In 2011 the university awarded him with an Honorary Doctorate of Laws degree.

For Edwards life’s road has not been guaranteed but his hard work has paid off.
